It is autumn on the slopes of the Sangre de Cristo mountains behind Santa Fe, the late sun slanting through the trees. My sister and I hike in the crisp, cool air while breezes lift glittering aspen leaves high into the air and shower them down on us like feathery golden coins.

Only the dark fir trees are truly ready for the coming winter.
